Household Rules.

As a parent, it can be difficult to find the balance between parenting and being friends with your little ones. It is important to ensure that whatever roles that you are taking on, you create rules and boundaries with your children. Rules and boundaries not only help children better prepare for the real world and their futures BUT it also allows for children to take on responsibility and take accountability for their actions. Here are some easy steps to create some rules for your children to follow:

1. Less is more! When creating rules, do not determine a long number of rules that you expect a preschooler to be able to remember and follow. Create a set number of rules based on the age of the child. For a preschooler about five rules should suffice.

2. Collaboration is a 21st century skill that should be implemented when making rules. Collaborate with your children. Ask them what rules that they think should be followed. Not only does this make them feel special and as if their opinions matter, it also allows for them to remember the rules better.

3. Allow for rule creation to also be a learning opportunity; use sight words and increase emotional and social wellness. If one of the rules created states to use gentle hands, place the text beside a picture of hands before posting it in your home. This learning method is based on The Continuity Principle and promotes deeper learning and retention.(Example provided below).

4. Practice makes perfect! In order for rules to be followed, take the time to go over rules with your child at the beginning of the day and before doing activities. This helps children remember rules and it also allows for them to show proof that they understand the rules by following them.

Here’s an example of rules that can help you when creating rules with your children:

Household Rules Example:

Be honest

Listen and follow directions

Be kind

Use your words

Use walking feet
